Lacuna Sports: Changing Women’s Cricket One Shirt at a Time

Charlotte Ashton from ‘Is That Middle’ reviews Lacuna Sports Main Collection pieces

Leigh Burns, founder of Lacuna, has changed the game when it comes to women’s cricket. She’s created the first-ever women’s cricket clothing brand, and can I just say, it’s phenomenal.

I want to talk a little about the brand and the amazing clothing Lacuna makes. It is worth saying that these clothes were very kindly sent to me but Leigh didn’t ask for anything in return, I genuinely am obsessed.

Founded in 2019, after Leigh got tired of her cricket-playing daughter having to wear ill-fitting and unflattering men’s kit, she decided to do something about it. Say goodbye to whites that are too long and are see-through, leading to confidence issues, or tops that squeeze way too tight under the arms or across the bust.

After working tirelessly testing and designing products, Lacuna now has a huge range of cricket clothing for every female player. Which leads me on nicely to my review of the products that were so kindly sent to me.

All of the products came in eco-friendly packaging, which really cemented to me how much Lacuna cares about their ethics and sustainability, something that really matters to me personally. I love that their products are made ethically and using sustainable materials.

Firstly, I’d like to talk about the Pace whites I was kindly sent in size M. These fit perfectly, as someone with long legs, the hems sit really nicely without needing to adjust. The material is thick but breathable and stretchy, meaning that if you, like me, are stuck in chilly North Yorkshire in April for 40 overs, you stay warm, but if you’re playing in 25° heat, you keep nice and cool. All of these things make me happy, but my favourite part has got to be the stretchy fabric that means I can comfortably get my thigh pads underneath without fear of over stretching or damaging the fabric!

This leads me on nicely to the Hybrid Training Shorts, which I got in a size M. They consist of an inner compression short in white, which are genuinely my favourite Lacuna product. Admittedly, I was a little nervous to try them, as I am highly sensitive to different textures, but they are the comfiest thing I have ever worn.

I can now say goodbye to having to panic get changed in toilets or ask my teammates to guard the men’s changing rooms whilst I get changed, as these compression shorts provide me with the option to be able to undress without fear of flashing!

The shorts on top are also incredibly comfy, and attach quickly and easily with just a button. I’d wear these on their own very easily for running or training, but I really love how they look with the compression shorts underneath!

Moving on to the lovely accessories that were sent to me, and these included a cotton pouch for any items (which I’ll absolutely be using to keep my cricket bag tidy!), a pair of period pants, a PonyFlo cap, and a set of Tie Bandz.

As you can see from the photo, the period pants are creased which shows that I’ve already used (and loved!) them. As someone that is sustainability-focused, I’ve got my fair share of period pants, but none in a lighter colour. These, combined with the Pace trousers, means that I don’t have to worry about trousers being see-through, or being self-conscious on my period. I’m a huge advocate for talking about periods in sport, and I’m so so thrilled to have spoken to Leigh all about this who shares my passion.

Moving on to the hair products, as someone with VERY thick and unruly hair that does entirely what it wants, I was honestly blown away. The PonyFlo cap fits so nicely, and I’m yet to get my hair stuck in the velcro which, as any person with long hair will know, is a real struggle. It’s really nice to be able to choose to wear your hair as you like, as this helps with confidence, and most importantly, comfort.

As I mentioned earlier, I have thick and wild hair on a good day, and I was a little nervous about the Tie Bandz hair ties when they arrived. I thought that they might snap or get tangled in my hair, but NOPE. They are comfortable, light-weight, and look really nice! I have no worries about them snapping, they adapt to any hairstyle, whether I put my hair in a huge bun, or little plaits, and they keep their stretch! I haven’t got my hair tangled in them once, and I don’t have to keep tightening my ponytail because they keep their stretch, no matter how much exercise I do. Also, as a chronic headache sufferer since childhood, they don’t put any strain on my scalp, pull, or cause any discomfort. I couldn’t speak more highly of them!

I couldn’t emphasise how truly blown away I am by these items and by the tireless work that the team at Lacuna put into creating high-quality, female-led, and ethical products. I’m really proud to be in any way associated with them, and will continue to sing their praises until I’m hoarse!
