Confidence in sport is about more than skill. It is about feeling comfortable, supported and free to move without worrying about your body or your period.
At Lacuna Sports, we believe what you wear can change how you play. That belief is why we were proud to support Cricket Without Boundaries’ Playing with Confidence pilot programme in Uganda.
The project began in Jinja when CWB volunteers noticed girls playing cricket without proper sports bras. From that moment grew a year-long, girl-led journey combining cricket, menstruation education and confidence building.
The Playing with Confidence festival brought together 75 girls in Jinja and Mukono for cricket, team activities and honest conversations about periods. Alongside this, 15 coaches received menstruation education training so they could better support their players.
Every girl went home with Lacuna Sports period pants and sports bras to try for themselves, and teams received bats, gloves and balls to help cricket continue beyond the festival. More than half of the girls now want to continue as peer leaders and peer educators, sharing what they have learned through play-based learning in their schools and communities.
This work is about removing barriers that quietly stop girls from playing. When girls feel safe, hygienic and supported, they stay in sport. They play with confidence.
We are proud to be part of a programme that puts dignity, choice and joy at the centre of sport.
We want to keep this work going. Donations will help create more educational resources and provide hardball cricket kit so girls can continue to play. £30 provides a set of period pants and a sports bra for one girl, and £300 provides sets for a full team of 10 girls.
