Play With Confidence: Empowering Girls in Uganda Through Cricket and Health

Be part of the change! Donate here to help Ugandan girls access sport, education, and dignity through cricket.

Many girls in Uganda miss school and sport due to lack of menstrual products and stigma. Girls often lack access to sports bras, limiting participation in cricket.

Play With Confidence is here to change that.

The Challenge

Far too many girls in Uganda face barriers that keep them from fully taking part in school and sport. Without menstrual products or support, many stay home during their periods. And when it comes to cricket, the lack of sports bras can mean sitting out altogether.

The Solution

The Play With Confidence festivals bring together cricket and women’s health education – creating safe, joyful spaces for girls to learn, play, and lead.

Each girl receives sports bras and reusable period pants designed by Lacuna Sports, along with coaching and mentoring from trained local leaders. The project also builds a network of youth role models in schools and clubs, helping girls feel comfortable and confident in their bodies.

  • £30 provides bras and reusable period pants for one girl
  • £300 supports a team of 10 girls
  • £100 provides a full kitbag (bats, pads, helmets) delivered via Bat for a Chance

By helping a girl feel confident in her body, you’re supporting her right to play, learn, and lead.

Our Approach

Each Play With Confidence festival blends cricket, education, and leadership in action:

  • Cricket festivals featuring matches, workshops, and peer leadership sessions
  • Girls test reusable menstrual products and sports bras, giving feedback for future rollout
  • Local coaches trained in women’s health education
  • Youth leaders (Cricket Changemakers) drive peer-to-peer education
  • Equipment supplied through Bat for a Chance ensures teams can keep playing long after the festivals end

The Plan

Phase 1 (2025): Pilot in Jinja and Mukono, with involvement from the national women’s team – 60 girls (6 teams of 10).

Phase 2 (2026 and beyond): Expand into northern hubs (Gulu, Lira, Masindi), developing a scalable model of women’s health education embedded within Uganda Cricket Association programmes.

Expected reach:

  • 500 girls directly and 1,250 indirectly over five years
  • Pilots in Jinja, Soroti, and Lugazi, scaling up to Gulu, Lira, and Masindi

The Impact

  • More girls staying in school and cricket
  • Menstruation normalised in sport
  • Increased confidence, leadership, and agency for adolescent girls

The Launch

The Playing With Confidence project kicks off in just a few days!
60 girls from Jinja and Mukono will take part in two days of festival cricket, learning about menstruation and women’s health, and exploring how cricket can be used as a platform for education, advocacy, and dignified menstruation.

A collaboration between eight organisations, this project is all about teamwork – and we’d love you to join our team.

Each girl who participates will receive reusable period pants and a custom sports bra to test and share feedback on how it affects her school and cricket experience.
